We tried the old method of using corn instead of a trellis or a stake to grow the beans and squash as the base. It didn't work as well as we thought.
Beans grew much faster than the corn. They ended up falling all over the place
It was difficult to collect beans as they were getting intertwined with the other plants
The squash didn't have enough room to grow and did nothing for the weeds.
We also found more pests which interfered with plant growth especially for the squash
We tried this for several years with different varieties.
It seems that this method requires more room and to start the corn before the beans. It seems easier to just have them all separate.
In the spring we will going back to separating them. Will give an update then
