We tried the old method of using corn instead of a trellis or a stake to grow the beans and squash as the base. It didn't work as well as we thought.

  • Beans grew much faster than the corn. They ended up falling all over the place

  • It was difficult to collect beans as they were getting intertwined with the other plants

  • The squash didn't have enough room to grow and did nothing for the weeds.

  • We also found more pests which interfered with plant growth especially for the squash

  • We tried this for several years with different varieties.

  • It seems that this method requires more room and to start the corn before the beans. It seems easier to just have them all separate.

  • In the spring we will going back to separating them. Will give an update then
