There is a trend to filling planters with sticks in order to reduce the amount of soil needed. We have been doing this for the last few years with the new beds. This is what we found.

Pros: It did work in reducing the amount of soil used.

Cons: By the following year it settled which lead us to fill in with soil. It continued to settle more than if we didn’t use this method.

Conclusion: It does save money for the first year but you will need to fill in the following years deferring costs. We found that this ended up being more work. This year we didn’t do it.
